Marilyn Stewart, well-known direct marketing practitioner, author and educator, has been named recipient of the Canadian Marketing Association’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award.

The honour replaces the Direct Marketer of the Year award, a change that was implemented to better reflect the winners’ lifetime achievements and body of work, says the CMA.

‘Marilyn’s commitment to providing quality education to budding information-based marketers is unparalleled in our industry,’ says John Gustavson, CMA president and CEO. ‘From conducting a round-table discussion with professors of Canadian universities in 1978 to leading the CMA’s educational seminars today, Marilyn has made information-based marketing education a personal mission.’

The highlights of her achievements in education include authorship of two seminal books on the Canadian direct marketing industry: The Canadian Direct Marketing Handbook and The Canadian Direct Marketing Handbook II, published in co-operation with the CMA.

Over more than 20 years, Stewart has trained tens of thousands of students, including more than 2,000 in 1998/99 alone, through programs with the CMA and its chapters, through the University of Toronto and Humber College, and through seminars for major Canadian corporations including Bell Canada, Canada Post, Statistics Canada and Wunderman Cato Johnson. She has also led the CMA’s Introduction to Direct Marketing Seminar since 1996.

A much-in-demand speaker, Stewart has addressed audiences from St. John’s to Vancouver on the principle of ‘understanding your customer.’ Her areas of expertise include direct marketing, database marketing, pharmaceutical marketing, and a host of other subjects.

Stewart’s credentials as a professional direct marketer stem from an outstanding track record over more than 30 years in the industry. She has helmed some of the premier agencies in the business, including Ogilvy & Mather Direct and Grey Direct, while launching her own businesses: Stewart Direct Marketing and, later, the Stewart Consulting Group.

She is an honorary life member of the CMA.
