The winners of the 1992 Retail Comp Awards were announced at SAC – The Business Development Conference last Wednesday in Edmonton.

The awards, organized each year by the Television Bureau of Canada (tvb), honor the best in retail television commercials.

The gold award went to ‘Les Marionnettes Politiques’ created for Quebec convenience store chain, Alimentation Couche-Tard, by Groupaction Marketing, Montreal with production by Objectif Production.

The spot, in French, features puppets of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Liberal leader Jean Chretien, Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa and Quebec separatist leader Jacques Parizeau, who despite their political differences all agree on the prices and convenience of Couche-Tard.

‘New Candles,’ which promoted the musical Phantom of the Opera, netted the silver award. Echo Advertising of Toronto created the commercial for client Live Entertainment. Production was by Shooters Film.

‘Fisherman’

Thunder Bay Television received bronze for ‘Fisherman,’ a commercial it wrote and produced for cellular phone company Fibertel.

The 1992 competition received a total of 421 entries, both French and English.

The entries are judged by consumers rather than creative experts.
