The transfer of media buying duties for Montgomery Ward department stores to Chicago has resulted in an undisclosed number of layoffs at Toronto’s Saffer Media, a division of Saffer Advertising.

Media buyers for the Phar-Mor drugstore chain, also handled in Toronto, have also been let go.

Phar-Mor, which has 305 stores in the u.s., put its advertising on hold earlier this year after filing for Chapter 11 protection against bankruptcy proceedings.

Saffer’s loss of revenue from Phar-Mor was remedied by the acquisition of the business for Northern Automotive.

The US$900-million auto parts chain operates retail stores in 23 states under the names Kragen, Checker, Schuck’s and Autoworks.
