Simmons Canada has awarded its account, estimated at $2 million, to Padulo Integrated of Toronto after a review of five agencies including incumbent of eight years, Backer Spielvogel Bates.

Simmons, based in Mississauga, Ont., makes Beautyrest and Beautysleep mattresses, and Hide-a-bed brand convertible sofas.

Doner Schur parts with Alberto-Culver

Doner Schur Peppler of Toronto has resigned the Alberto-Culver Canada creative assignment after six years, but will continue to handle the $4-million-plus account until March 1.

Alberto-Culver is reviewing a short-list of agencies and expects to make a final decision soon.

Media placement is handled by Harrison Young Pesonen & Newell of Toronto.

Lufthansa flies with Y&R

The Canadian assignment for Lufthansa German Airlines has moved to Young & Rubicam of Toronto as part of a worldwide consolidation of the account.

Y&R New York picked up the rest of the global business late last year from McCann-Erickson Advertising, which had the account in the u.s., Asia and Latin America.

In Canada, the account was previously with McCann-Erickson sister agency Harrod & Mirlin of Toronto.

Gee Jeffery has right note for Chum

Gee Jeffery & Partners of Toronto has been awarded the creative account for all Chum radio stations after the success of a summer 1993 campaign for Toronto station chum-fm.

This is the first full-time agency for Toronto-based Chum, which owns chum-am and chum-fm in Toronto, and 22 stations across Canada.

The summer tv campaign for the Toronto station – ‘It’s all you need to put on’ – featured a naked man walking to work, and a flirtatious couple in a dimly lit bedroom.

First on the agenda for the new agency is a new campaign for ‘oldies’ station chum-am.

Black & Decker splits

Black & Decker has moved advertising responsibility for its power tool business to Leo Burnett as part of its North American strategy.

Creative will come from Leo Burnett in Chicago, with the Toronto office handling media placement.

The Canadian assignment was previously with McKim Baker Lovick/ BBDO in Toronto, which continues to handle creative and media for the company’s housewares division.

Mike Golden, vice-president of Black & Decker’s power tool division, says all creative for the last 18 months, whether from the u.s. or Canadian agency, has been used on a North American basis.

Golden says the consolidation is tied to company strategy, and is not a reflection of mbl/bbdo’s performance.

GM consolidates U.S. media

General Motors has consolidated u.s. media buying, nearly US$1 billion, with Lintas:Worldwide and McCann-Erickson, leaving Leo Burnett and D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles out in the cold.

The two Interpublic Group agencies will set up a separate media division to handle the assignment.

Four years ago, General Motors of Canada consolidated its media business with MacLaren:Lintas of Toronto, prompting the agency to establish its media buying operation, Initiative Media Canada.
