Cineplex Odeon has promoted Marci Davies to assistant vice-president, marketing.

Previously, Davies was director of marketing.

Her new title reflects added responsibilities, particularly in the areas of concession advertising and corporate public relations.


Award-winning art director John Speakman is leaving Vickers & Benson Advertising to join Young & Rubicam next week as vice-president, group creative director.

As well, Speakman will be the new creative partner for Rick Davis, y&r’s senior vice-president and creative director.

Speakman has been v&b senior vice-president, executive art director for the past two years, working on accounts such as Amstel, Cantel and McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada.

Before v&b, Speakman won awards for his Ralston Purina, Carlsberg, Labatt Blue, Volvo and Cadbury creative during five years as senior vice-president, executive art director at Scali McCabe Sloves.

His three-year stint as vice-president, executive art director at MacLaren:Lintas was highlighted by his work for Molson and Imperial Oil.

è Simon Billing has signed on as chief operating officer, a new position, at Robins Sharpe Associates in Toronto, and will be concentrating on strategic planning as well as long-term direction of the agency.

Billing spent the last 18 months with FCB/Ronalds-Reynolds as vice-president, group account director, primarily responsible for the Molson and S.C. Johnson accounts.

He moved to Canada from England in 1977, and worked at Toronto agencies McKim, Leo Burnett, Scali McCabe Sloves and Deacon Day before fcb/r-r.

è Graham Avery joined Bozell Palmer Bonner as senior vice-president, director of client services last month.

Avery had been on the sidelines since last June when he left the post of president of Saffer Advertising after just eight months on the job.

He was general manager of Backer Spielvogel Bates for seven years before his move to Saffer.

è John Kewley has signed on with McCann-Erickson Advertising as group creative director to work with executive art director Terry Iles.

Kewley comes from J. Walter Thompson where he has been co-creative director on accounts such as Pepsi-Cola and Teledyne Water Pik for the past three years.

He started his career at Maclaren:Lintas and spent three years as senior writer with Young & Rubicam before joining jwt.

è Barrett Book leaves MacLaren:Lintas at the end of the week to join MGA Advertising (formerly Merton Gibson) of Toronto.

Book, MacLaren’s vice-president, account director for Molson Canadian Trademark, has been with the agency for more than eight years.

His new title has not been assigned yet, but mga’s Molson account will be among his responsibilities.

mga handles Molson sports and entertainment promotions such as Molson Rocks and the Molson Indy.

Before MacLaren, Book spent two years at JWT Direct, working on the Midas business.

è Peter Tutlys has left Toronto’s Campaign House after a four-year stint, most recently as vice-president account services.

è Judith Elder has been appointed managing director of Ogilvy & Mather Direct Response.

Elder has been with O&M Advertising for the past 12 years, and was made senior vice-president, group account director last year.

è Eileen Smith has been promoted to the post of print production manager at Vickers & Benson Advertising, Toronto. Smith has spent nine of her 20 years in the business with v&b.

è Jennifer Tucker is back at McKim Baker Lovick/BBDO, this time as media buyer/planner on the Gillette business, after 12 months with sister agency, The Case for Advertising.

Tucker was a buyer at McKim for a year before joining Case as planner/buyer.


Effective Feb. 1, Darrell Atherley will be the new vice-president of sales and marketing at Family Channel.

Atherley will join Family Channel after eight years with Canadian Satellite Communications, the last four and a half of which he spent as director of affiliate marketing of its cable market services division.

è Craig Harvey has been appointed manager – Infodirect, a division of Tele-Direct (Publications.) For the past several years, Harvey has developed and managed direct marketing products.

Joining him is Fred Hagerman, the new manager – direct marketing for Tele-Direct (Publications.)

Hagerman has an extensive background in sales management.
