The Royal Bank and British Airways have signed sponsorship contracts with The Live Entertainment Corporation of Canada to underwrite classical music concerts at the Recital Hall at the new North York Performing Arts Centre.

The inaugural season at the Metropolitan Toronto hall begins in November and runs until June 1994.

Hugh Wakeham, director of sponsorships for The Live Entertainment Corporation of Canada (livent), says the bank and the airline are title sponsors, both having spent more than the $70,000 necessary to get that distinction.

The bank’s music series is called The Royal Bank Great Artists Series.

The airline’s series are called the British Airways Tafelmusik Series and the British Airways Winners Circle Series.

Tafelmusik is a chamber orchestra. British Airways’ Winners Circle Series will showcase young Canadian soloists just making their mark on music.

The Royal’s sponsored concerts will feature musicians of international repute such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and singer Frederica von Stade.

Wakeham says sponsorship of a series costs from $15,000 to $35,000, adding sponsorship of a concert costs $5,000.

He says at the moment sponsorship contracts are for one year.

The Recital Hall’s black-tie inaugural gala will feature New Zealand singer Kiri Te Kanawa, with Air New Zealand being one of the sponsors

Two more sponsors for that event are being sought.

Peter Case, vice-president of advertising for the Royal, says as well as the usual benefits associated with sponsorship – awareness, supporting a good cause – the bank’s association with Recital Hall events helps its VISA Gold Card customers.

Preferred ticket sales

Case says cardholders can take advantage of preferred ticket sales which allow them to buy concert tickets before they go on sale to the general public.

According to livent, there are a number of benefits associated with sponsorship of Recital Hall events, including credit in all advertising, complimentary tickets, reception areas at the North York Performing Arts Centre, and front-of-house signage crediting the sponsoring company.

Also, corporate sponsors of the 1993-94 season will have first right on negotiation for a similar concert or series the next season. DC
