Thrifty Car Rental Canada has let go its senior director of marketing, Tony Jones.

Jones’ position was eliminated as a result of changes to the firm’s head-office marketing group.

He had been with the firm for more than five years.

- Montreal-based paint company Sico has appointed Roger Samson as vice-president and general manager of its commercial division.

Samson has been vice-president of sales and marketing at Sico for nearly six years.

- Mazda Canada has appointed Jim Gordon as director of marketing. Gordon, who was formerly director of sales, replaces Peter Whaley.

Whaley has been named director of regional operations.

- Three senior executive appointments have been announced at Electrohome, the Kitchener, Ont.-based communications and electronics products and services firm.

William McGregor has been named senior vice-president, Electrohome; Bruce Cowie has become vice-president, broadcasting; and Daniel Wright has been appointed vice-president and chief financial officer.

Marta Cutler is leaving DDB Needham at the end of the month to join MacLaren:Lintas.

Cutler, vice-president creative group head, has been copywriter on the Volkswagen business at DDB Needham for the past four years.

At MacLaren:Lintas, her accounts will include Diet Coke, Lever Bros., Chesebrough-Pond’s and Nestle.

Before joining DDB Needham, Cutler was copywriter with Saatchi & Saatchi for more than four years.

- Lorraine McCaughey has resigned as president and chief executive officer of public relations firm Burson-Marsteller Canada effective April 30.

bm chairman Allan Gotlieb will temporarily take over the role of ceo after McCaughey’s departure.

- Cathy Quinton has joined Western International Media Canada in Toronto as planning supervisor responsible for all media planning for both Canadian and u.s. clients advertising in Canada.

Prior to joining Western International Media, she spent five years with Young & Rubicam, most recently as media supervisor on accounts such as Kodak, Whitehall Robins, Holiday Inn, Hostess Frito-Lay, Hershey, Dominion Securities and the pharmaceutical clients of Sudler & Hennessey, a division of y&r.

Before y&r, Quinton was with Vickers & Benson and FCB Canada.

Western International Media handles $44 million in media placement annually from its Toronto headquarters and will be expanding to Vancouver this spring.

- Katie Noble has joined Senior Solutions Marketing and Solutions Public Relations of Toronto as director of public relations.

Noble gained her public relations and event marketing experience at Sun Life’s British head office and Canadian Tire.

Senior Solutions is a full-service agency specializing in the 50-plus market.

- Brian O’Boyle has joined Highwood Communications, Calgary, as production manager.

A graduate of the advertising and public relations program at Grant MacEwan Community College in Edmonton, O’Boyle was most recently with AGT Limited.

- Brian Spence has been appointed vice-president and general manager of Mediair Direct Mail Services, Scarborough. He was most recently the company’s operations manager.

Mediair is a leading Canadian lettershop and fulfillment company.

- Duncan McKie, former vice-president of research and development/production at BBM, is joining Decima Research May 1.

McKie’s main task will be to expand the advertising industry’s involvement with Toronto-based Decima.

- There have been a number of new appointments in English television marketing and sales at cbc-tv.

The changes are effective April 1.

Adam Litzinger will become director of sales for sports, corporate sponsorship and the u.s. cbc’s rep firm in the u.s. is Seltel.

Steve Jones takes over a newly created position, national director of sales, next month. All 12 sales managers across the country will report to Jones.

Glenn Wert becomes director of marketing and will focus his energies on cbc-tv Yield Management strategies.
