In a move bound to take some of the guesswork out of buying a used car, Blackburn Marketing Services has bought Carfax.

Carfax, based in Columbia, Mo., uses a patented process to uncover potential fraud in used vehicles.

The company provides on-line vehicle title searches that uncover any discrepancies in an auto’s history such as odometer rollbacks.

Typical users of the services include auto dealers, banks, insurance companies and car buyers.

Blackburn Marketing Services, owned by The Blackburn Group in London, Ont., also supplies automotive statistics and demographic information to the Canadian auto industry.

Its president, Bill Goldstein, says The Blackburn Group intends to expand geographic coverage to include all of Canada and the u.s.

At the moment, Carfax’s database covers 13 u.s. states with 80 million records going back to 1981.

As well as its office in Columbia, Carfax has another office in Arlington, Va., and plans to open others in Detroit, Los Angeles and Toronto. DC
