After more than 20 years on the air, The Polka Dot Door tv show for children is creating a line of merchandising spinoffs.

Cindy Galbraith, manager of marketing, planning and support for TVOntario, the show’s producer, says in September all The Polka Dot Door’s non-human characters – Marigold, Bear, Humpty, Dumpty and the magical elongated Polkaroo itself – will appear as plush toys or on a limited range of items such as sneakers and activity and crafts book.

Galbraith says her goal is to have Polka Dot Door merchandise in retail outlets across the country or used in promotions for breakfast cereal, for example.

Also out on video this fall will be 12 Polka Dot Door titles, says Galbraith, with more to follow.

She says TVOntario, the provincial educational channel, chose The Polka Dot Door to begin its serious merchandising efforts because the show has a national audience.

However, she points out those connected with the program are anxious to retain its integrity.

Galbraith says a touring version of Polka Dot Door has been formed and has already performed at a few venues.

She says at some point another TVOntario children’s production, Bookmice, could be merchandised.

Representing Polka Dot Door is G Squared Promotion in Thornhill, Ont. and Children’s Hour Productions in Toronto.
