Joel Olanow died July 10 at the age of 42 after a two-year illness.

Olanow took his first job with General Foods in the mid-1970s, moving to the agency side with Grey Advertising to work on the Procter & Gamble account a few years later.

He held account positions with Scali McCabe Sloves, Anderson Advertising, and Camp Associates from 1981 through 1991 before forming his own company, AJO Consultants.

Olanow was a major supporter of NABS, the National Advertising Benevolent Society, and was appointed to its Advisory Council in 1991.

He started as a NABS Captain while at Anderson, later becoming chairman of fundraising in 1986 and head of the NABS Gala committee for three years.

In 1989, Olanow became the youngest nabs president and the only one to remain for a second term.
