Japan tops in quality

The country that gave the world Sony, Nissan, Nikon, Canon, Honda, Panasonic and other brand names associated with quality has come out on top in the first Bozell-Gallup Worldwide Quality Poll.

In the just released findings, Japan scored a composite 38.5% for its goods rated excellent or very good.

Canada was ranked sixth at 18.3%.

Full results of the first poll are available from The Communications Group in Toronto.

Specialty TV hearings

hearings are under way for the 48 applicants for specialty tv licences.

Most guesses suggest the crtc will grant six to eight licences to applicants who want to bring Canadian viewers such services as an all-cartoon channel, an all-country music channel, several all-news channels, a regional all-sports channel, and an all-comedy channel, among others.

At press-time, the cbc’s application for a licence for its proposed Festival arts channel had been heard, as had the CHUM/ Citytv application for its proposed arts channel, Bravo!

The network consists of a partnership involving Imperial Oil, Best Western Hotels, ACC Long Distance, Hertz Canada and The Financial Post, each of which will supply discounts and special deals for Sharp’s customers.

There is also a sweepstakes for a Sharp Home Office, valued at 10,000 value, and various prizes from the participating firms.

The program, the first of its kind for Sharp, was developed in-house. Execution is by First Avenue, a Toronto promotion house.
