The growing popularity of inline hockey has spawned a new adult competitive, non-contact league in Toronto.

The Ontario Inline Hockey League (oihl), which held the first game of its premier winter season Nov. 15., was created by President Paul Mintha.

Mintha has a second career as marketing and promotions manager and director of scouting with the University of Toronto intercollegiate hockey team, the Varsity Blues.

The oihl winter season lasts until Feb. 23 and is already scheduled to be followed by a spring season beginning the same day.

The winter and spring games are being played in an indoor soccer facility, since ice arenas have already installed their ice for the 1994-95 ice-hockey season.

Mintha says he hopes to establish a province-wide association of inline hockey leagues with common rules and regular tournaments.

Mintha ran one of the first inline hockey leagues in Toronto this summer, but left to form oihl.

He says several equipment manufacturers, sponsors, among them Kuzak Wheels and Hyper, have already signed on as oihl sponsors.

Just Hockey, a Toronto equipment retailer, will also sponsor the league. PA
