Microsoft Canada has joined forces with Canadian Airlines International and Compaq to launch a holiday season promotion behind its Microsoft Home software line.

Under the terms of the ‘Fly with Us’ promotion, which was announced Nov. 8. and runs until the end of the year, the purchase of any two Microsoft Home products qualifies the buyer to purchase – for $1 – a round-trip companion ticket to any Canadian Airlines destination in Europe.

In other words, buy one regular-priced ticket to Europe and get a second one for your travel partner for only a buck.

Consumers can typically buy two deep-discount round trips to Europe for about the same price, but restrictions apply to the discount tickets that do not apply to the regular price tickets.

A second way to qualify for the promotion is by buying a Compaq Presario personal computer and one or more Microsoft Home titles.

For an additional dollar, the purchasers of this combination get a Microsoft Home Value Pack, which includes a travel certificate for a round-trip companion ticket, two Microsoft Home titles and several other computer-related items.

Keith Wintraub, Microsoft’s product manager, consumer products division, says he expects the promotion will fuel sales of Microsoft Home titles over the holiday season.

Wintraub says he believes Microsoft, Canadian and Compaq make a powerful promotional team because ‘the people who are flying Canadian, the people who are using multimedia computers and the people who are buying Microsoft Home titles are the same people.’

A similar program has been launched in the u.s. involving Microsoft, Compaq and Delta Airlines.

The linking of Microsoft and Compaq comes as a result of a joint agreement signed six months ago.

The agreement calls for the two firms to ‘look for ways to work together, ‘ Wintraub says.

‘I think you’re going to see more and more of this,’ he says.

Microsoft is supporting the promotion with print and radio advertising from its Canadian ad agency, Chiat/Day.

Compaq is tagging its Presario tv spots with information about the offer. It will also advertise the program in print and radio advertising.

Ad agency is Ammirati & Puris.

Canadian’s agency is also Chiat/Day.

Canadian’s support includes ads in its in-flight magazine.
