BMG Canadx years as head of music retailer HMV Canada, Paul Alofs is leaving to take over as president of BMG Music Canada.

Alofs replaces Bob Jamieson, who moved to New York to head sister company RCA Records.

While president of hmv, Alofs took the British-owned company from a $38 million business to a chain of 80 music stores reporting annual sales of $200 million in the last fiscal year.

hmv has not yet chosen a replacement for Alofs.

At bmg, Alofs will run bmg’s Canadian activities except for BMG Direct, the mail order music operation launched last December in Canada.

Alofs began his career in brand management with Colgate-Palmolive.

He switched to the agency side for a short stint with Grey Advertising.

He then became vice-president of client services at Marketing & Promotion Group of Toronto before joining hmv.

BMG Music Canada is part of BMG Entertainment North America, which is a unit of BMG Entertainment, the $5.3-billion-a-year entertainment division of Bertelsmann AG.

BMG Entertainment North America also includes the music labels Arista Records, RCA Records, Private Music and Zoo Entertainment, as well as BMG Direct, BMG Distribution, BMG Interactive Entertainment, BMG Music Publishing, BMG Video, and Nice Man Merchandising.
