Let your cell phone do the walking

Sympatico-Lycos is gearing up to test a wireless Internet service that it says will allow customers to search the Yellow Pages directory for specific businesses – such as a bank or restaurant – up to eight kilometres from where they are. The customer will then receive precise directions to the location from his or her current position. The technology, pioneered by Lucent Technologies, enables wireless operators to deliver personalized data to geo-locator-enabled phones. The trial, which began last month, will last approximately six weeks. Commercial deployment of geo-location services is expected later next year.
