Jeff O'Brien has been named managing director, retail and marketing at Disney Consumer Products (DCP) Canada in Toronto. O'Brien joins from Hasbro Canada where he held senior leadership roles in both sales and marketing. Prior to Hasbro, he worked in various senior sales and marketing positions with both Mattel and General Foods in Canada.

Cygnal Technologies, a provider of broadband, data and telecommunications networks, has named Debbie MacLeod VP, sales and marketing of its broadband networks group. MacLeod has been with the Oshawa, Ont.-based company since 1993.

Paul Evans has been named COO of Generation 5, a Toronto-based e-business technology developer. He will lead the company’s sales, marketing and product management functions. Evans has held a number of executive management positions, most recently at MapInfo.

Linmor has added David Burns as VP of strategic marketing. Burns brings 25 years of experience to the Ottawa-based data networks real-time service assurance solutions provider.

Mississauga, Ont.-based Sharp Electronics of Canada has appointed Aldo Sperduti to director of marketing for the consumer group.

Lee-Anne Wiseman has been appointed marketing manager at Maynards Industries in Vancouver. Wiseman most recently worked with the Environmental Fund of B.C. Maynards specializes in appraisals, auctions and liquidation sales.

Toronto International Film Festival Group has promoted Gabrielle Free to director, media and public relations. Free will oversee internal and external communications, international media relations and publicity.

Agencies

New Vancouver agency Pineapple Group Marketing Communications opened its doors last month. Managing director Derek Shorkly was previously marketing strategy and brand consultant with the Lowe Group in London. Pineapple’s new creative director, Darren Darcy, joins from a stint as an independent design and marketing consultant. Bringing over 20 years of experience, Alisa Choi joins as media director.

Brann Worldwide has appointed Andrew Pugsley VP and CD of the company’s Canadian office in Toronto. Pugsley brings 15 years of advertising, design and management experience to the post. He joins from TBWAChiatDay where he was associate CD at the Toronto office.

Toronto’s AMW Direct has promoted Marlene St. Jean to VP, senior account director. She has been with the firm since 1998 and will be overseeing the development of marketing strategies and new business as well as supervising such accounts as Telus, Panasonic, BMO Harris Private Banking and Hydro One.

Donna Smith has been promoted to VP at Starcom Worldwide’s Toronto office; she began her career at Leo Burnett/Starcom in 1994 as a media supervisor.

TBWAChiatDay has appointed Paula Howell as GM of the agency’s Toronto office. Howell was most recently VP and GM with Roche Macaulay & Partners where clients included Mercedes-Benz, Ralston Purina, IKEA Germany, Corby Distilleries and Holt Renfrew.

Vancouver-based Detroit Creative Group has opened an office in Whistler, B.C. Staff at the new digs includes Meredith Armstrong as client services manager and Chris Zawada and Anna Kilian as designers.

Zig has added three new team members to its Toronto office. Art director Craig Brownrigg and copywriter Hayes Steinberg are partners and join from Ammirati Puris. Brownrigg’s previous experience includes stints at MacLaren McCann, Gee Jeffery & Partners and Ogilvy & Mather; Steinberg has worked with Ranscombe & Co. and Roche Macaulay & Partners. As well, Mark Puchala joins as art director from Flavour (The Wolf Group) and, prior to that, FCB.

Vancouver-based e-mail marketing firm Forge Marketing has hired Bonnie Giles as account director. Recently arrived from Toronto, Giles worked at FCB Direct, as well as Purolator Courier, Grey Direct, Harlequin Publishing and Rogers Cable.

Manifest Communications has hired four new account executives. Hera Lee, Penny Savoie, Amy Diniz and Nils Engelstad have joined the firm’s Toronto office.

Toronto interactive marketing agency Ninedots has added Stephen Bennett as design and art director. He brings several years of experience including work with Mod7 and Blue Zone Entertainment.

Toronto-based Applied Arts Magazine has appointed Jeffrey Shearer as publisher. A former publisher of Saturday Night and VP of marketing for the Toronto Star, Shearer returns to the magazine business after leaving his most recent post as VP of marketing for wireless provider, Azonic Networks.

Corus Entertainment in Toronto has promoted Suzanne Carpenter to GM of CING-FM 95.3, a Corus-owned radio station serving the Toronto area. Carpenter moves to the GM role from her previous position as VP of sales for Corus Television. Replacing Carpenter as VP of sales is Gerry Mackrell, who moves from his old post as director of sales for Corus Children’s Television.
