Forzani abandons e-shop

Another one bites the dust.

Another one bites the dust.

I’m sure you’ve all read the news that Calgary-based Forzani Group has pulled the plug on its flagship SportChek.ca e-com site, claiming not enough people shopped online to make it worthwhile.

Now I’ll be the first to admit I would never buy running shoes, or a sports bra online – unless they were repeat purchases. But there are things I would and do buy, when I can find them… ‘When I can find them’ being the operative word here.

Canadian e-tailers have cried for years that there’s no money to be made. For starters, I’d argue the Internet has only recently hit the mainstream – I think we’re finally now at around 60% of Canadian adults with a home Internet connection who have purchased an item directly online. And secondly, the number of ‘ongoing’ online buyers is reflective of the number of online sellers.

What choice is there really – in any category in Canada – for Canadians wanting to shop online? A few forward-thinking boutiques, Sears.ca and now Amazon… And if there aren’t any Canadian sites to shop from, how can we expect to achieve a critical mass of online shoppers?

Cheers – BJ
