Check it out: Nike’s non-comeback story

Sports fans, particularly North American ones, love stories of strife – of overcoming odds, of fighting back demons before reaching goals. And never more than at the Olympics.

There will be plenty of those to feast on in the coming weeks, and Nike has a preview in its spot profiling Canadian basketball player Natalie Achonwa’s recovery from a torn ACL in 2014.

“I don’t like the word comeback because I don’t want to go back to who I was, or what I was,” she says, after detailing the step-by-step struggle to return to fitness and the need to celebrate the small, daily victories on the way.

But the message isn’t sentimental. Achonwa, a power forward from Guelph, Ont., says she’s trying to be a different player than she was before her injury: “I’m trying to build Natalie 2.0.”

The 80-second video is part of Nike’s “Unlimited” series, which features other stars including golfer Rory McIlroy and tennis player Serena Williams.
