Discount airliner Swoop is hoping it can get a new trend to take off with the rollout of what it calls the “Warmest Hoodie Ever” – a limited-edition hoodie that comes with a round trip to a sunny destination.
The ultra-low cost carrier (ULCC) is only selling 100 of the hoodies – which it is offering for $99 – and while there’s nothing particularly special about the sweaters themselves, each of them does come with a $500 flight voucher. That’s more than enough for the purchaser to book themselves a round-trip flight to a destination in the U.S., Mexico or the Caribbean. The vouchers and hoodies will be available while supplies last, and the flights must be booked no later than Nov. 15, with the round trip completed by Dec. 15.
The airline, a subsidiary of WestJet, offers more than 100 weekly flights to 13 such destinations, and the goal of the promotion is to tap into a simple insight: many travelers who use Swoop comment on the low cost of the carrier’s flights, comparing them to a pair of designer jeans or a full tank of gas.
“It’s safe to say most Canadians dream about hitting the beach at some point during the winter,” explains David Giovando, group CD at Oliver, the agency that developed the promo with Swoop. “The ‘Warmest Hoodie Ever’ makes it easier and more affordable than ever – reinforcing Swoop’s core brand values.”
Turning clothes into some kind of ticket is becoming a trendy way to reach fashion-conscious customers. Last year, OLG released “Dream Drop,” a limited fashion line where each piece served as a scannable Lotto Max ticket.
