A new partnership between Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) and Suncor’s Petro-Canada will see the retail giant’s gas stations take on the Petro-Canada banner, while also greatly extending the reach of their loyalty programs.
Through the agreement, CTC’s Triangle Rewards program will partner with Petro-Canada’s Petro-Points program. Though each company will retain full ownership and control over its respective program, the partnership will enable Canadians belonging to either program to have access to a wider array of benefits.
For CTC, this means Triangle Rewards will now be accepted at Petro-Canada, extending its reach from over 200 gas stations to more than 1,800, “driving enhanced value for Canadians at the pumps by providing more opportunities for members to earn CT Money in a high-frequency category,” said Greg Hicks, president and CEO of CTC, in a statement.
Additionally, CTC will rebrand more than 200 of its retail gas stations with the Petro-Canada name, though it will maintain its ownership of those locations. The deal will allow members of Petro-Canada’s SuperPass commercial fleet program to use what had previously been Canadian Tire branded stations, while also enabling CTC to tap into Suncor to provide a wider array of products and services – such as low carbon energy alternatives – to its existing consumers.
Resulting from the deal, Suncor will also become CTC’s primary fuel provider over time, with the expectation that it will eventually supply more than one billion litres of fuel to the CTC network, annually. That will amount to a 17% increase in retail fuel sales volume for Petro-Canada over the previous year.
“This partnership is a tangible example of our commitment to optimize our retail network and expand strategic partnerships for Petro-Canada,” said Rich Kruger, president and CEO of Suncor, in the statement. “This will provide long-term value to our shareholders by securing a long-term supply relationship for our refineries, while continuing to build on our brand.”
The loyalty partnership is expected to launch in the fall of this year, while CTC’s retail stations will be rebranded over the next several years.
