Last week, Canadian wildfires made skylines across North America resemble hues not seen since Mad Max: Fury Road.
And with the amount of Canadian forest burned by wildfires so far in 2023 already exceeding full-year levels from 2022 and 2021, these are shades people might need to get used to seeing.
To bring more attention to this alarming trend, Toronto creative consultancy Blackjet created a satirical report that took its cues from “colour of the year” and other trend forecasts to identify the summer’s hottest colour palette, inspired by some of the disconcerting shades seen in the skies.
Blackjet has declared that the “shades of summer 2023” include “Alberta Wildfire,” “Philly Phlegm,” and “New York Pyre.” While the “trends” are currently taking off on the east coast, the shop’s experts foresee that Los Angeles and a dozen other global hotspots will soon follow suit.
The shades are laid out like a fashion spread showing them in apparel and interior decor, complete with satirical headers like “It started in rural Quebec. Days later it hit New York. Now it’s spreading like wildfire.”
There are also facetious quotes courtesy of Blackjet CEO Rob Galletta about the trends being “deeply referential,” as they directly call back California wildfires from 2021. “Right now, all eyes are on New York, but San Francisco did it first.”
“When you’re in a creative field you’re always looking ahead,” Galletta says. However, he concedes that it is hard to create when the world is literally on fire. “The ‘report’ explores, tongue-firmly-planted in cheek, the genesis of the ‘new colour trend that’s spreading like wildfire’ and traces it to its troubling origins.”
