The O.G. Lions category, Film, was released on the second day, way ahead of the typical Cannes schedule. The industry typically waits on tenterhooks for the most prestigious list to be unveiled at the end of the week, and while Canada can count itself a member of the 2023 Film club with four nominations, it’s certainly not the country’s best showing.
There’s been a downward trend of Canadian work making an appearance on the list. Last year, the country only saw two pieces of work recognized. That’s a marked shift from year’s prior – 14 in 2021, 11 in 2019, 15 in 2017, and 9 in 2016. But the category is a tough one. It’s one of the most entered, with 1,867 entries worldwide, 74 from Canada. So nods for Zulu Alpha Kilo, Bensimon Byrne/Narrative and Ogilvy come with much applause.
Tuesday morning’s lists also included Creative Commerce, Creative Business Transformation, Creative Strategy, Creative Effectiveness and Mobile. The country’s tally was 16, with a total of 198 so far. However, Canada was shut out of Creative Business Transformation, save for an “other” mention for McCann Canada in the “Mastercard: Three Years of Inclusive Cards,” which also got a nod in Creative Strategy.
This time FCB Toronto led the pack of local shops on the day’s worth of shortlists. It picked up five nominations in Creative Commerce for work for BMO and OLG. Agencies on the lists include Rethink, Angry Butterfly, Performance Art, Cossette and Dentsu Creative.
Tonight in Cannes (this afternoon in Canada) will see winners in the Entertainment Lions, Entertainment Lions for Gaming, Entertainment Lions for Music, Entertainment Lions for Sport, Design, Digital Craft, Film Craft, and Industry Craft Lions be unveiled.
