Daiya is unveiling two new plant-based cheese innovations, tapping what it sees as promise in the category.
The B.C.-based dairy alternative’s Goat Cheeze and Feta Cheeze flavours are made with oat flour to re-create a texture similar to other cheeses. It is available in a tub pack format that is resealable, recyclable and “pre-crumbled” to fit various recipe needs. It will be available on-shelf nationally this summer.
“We pride ourselves on offering delicious and innovative cheesy plant-based products, and these new crumbles are no exception,” says Melanie Domer, Daiya Foods’ CMO, who was appointed to the post last December after a stint as VP of customer marketing and in-store experience for Mars Wrigley in Chicago.
Daiya’s latest innovations follow on the heels of the company’s spring multi-million dollar investment in fermentation technology that it says will enable it to create a plant-based cheese that is “tastier, meltier and stretchier” than the competitive set.
The investment, Daiya says, will help it lead the marketplace with a traditional fermented plant-based cheese across its portfolio, “revolutionizing consumers’ perception and experience of the category.”
The company’s CEO Michael Watt says its Burnaby facility is the largest of its kind in North America, and that he believes the future of plant-based cheese achieving parity to dairy lies in traditional fermentation techniques.
According to the company, the continued push into cheese is part of wholescale plant-based innovations, driven by a growing demand for healthier, more sustainable and ethical food options by both vegans and flexitarians.
Grand View Research insights reveal that the global plant-based food market size is expected to reach $74.2 billion USD by 2027, growing at a CAGR of approximately 12%.
Daiya’s Goat Cheeze Flavour Crumbles and Feta Cheeze Flavour Crumbles can be found within the deli or dairy aisle at Loblaw, Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, Metro Ontario and Zehrs. Sobeys and Safeway banners will begin stocking them in September.
Daiya Foods launched in 2008 and currently has exposure in 25,000 grocery stores in the U.S. and Canada. The company’s line of plant-based foods began with cheese formats including blocks, shreds, slices, sticks, cream cheese style spreads and cheese sauces. Daiya has since expanded into cheese-centric products like pizza, mac & cheese, and frozen cheesecake.
