Cannes Digest: Canada’s Cannes Lions total rises to 39

More than halfway through the weeklong 2024 Cannes Lions festival, Canadian agencies are continuing to see strong awards results on top of its shortlist nominations.

The final shortlist was revealed by the festival on Wednesday, in the Sustainable Developments category, and its three nods brought Canada to a festival total of 166 shortlist nods. The number falls short of its record 202 nominations last year, but ranks far ahead of its shortlist numbers in 2022 (89) and 2021 (141).

But after a pair of Gold Lions on Tuesday, and 18 more Silver and Bronze Lions on Wednesday, Canada’s awards total is standing strong at 39.

Klick Health picked up its second Gold Lion of the week from the Cannes jury, picking up an Entertainment Lion win for its “American Cancer Story” campaign promoting the non-profit Change the Ref. The campaign was praised as the strongest brand collaboration the Entertainment jury saw.

Canada brought home another Gold Lion on Tuesday when FCB was awarded in the Entertainment for Sports category for the critically acclaimed “Runner 321” campaign with Adidas. The creative saw the brand and agency give neurodivergent athletes their own number, 321, to compete in major marathons around the world.

Canada’s 18 Silver and Bronze Lions on Wednesday were highlighted by Rethink picking up seven of the trophies. Edelman, Courage, FCB, Dentsu, VML, Angry Butterfly, Ogilvy and LG2 were all awarded Lions the same day, as well. Canada’s most awarded agencies so far are Rethink with 11 Lions, Klick Health with six and FCB with four.

Later on Wednesday, the Gold and Grand Prix winners in the Creative B2B, Creative Data, Direct, Media, PR, and the Social & Influencer categories will be revealed.
