D.PE tasked with Yonge-Dundas Square rebrand
In December, Toronto City Council formally changed the name of Yonge-Dundas Square to Sankofa Square and has chosen D.PE Agency to lead its brand strategy, identity and community engagement, following a rigorous tender.
D.PE Agency will launch a rebranding strategy involving six stages. The first phase kicks off this month with a teaser creative campaign entitled “Embrace the Possibilities” alongside community engagement, outreach and a market research study in collaboration with Pitch Better, an organization which supports entrepreneurship in underrepresented communities.
The remaining stages, including communications and media relations, visual identity development, brand marketing strategy and partnerships, will follow. By early 2025, Sankofa Square will officially launch with an integrated brand campaign and identity. The project is aimed to align with the City of Toronto’s revitalization initiatives to live up to its position as a central attraction in downtown Toronto.
“Developing a new identity will allow a collective community and society to embrace and celebrate ancestral knowledge, reconciliation, and take action towards a positive way forward,” says Ashley McKenzie-Barnes, founder of D.PE Agency.
The Square will continue to be an event space and meeting point for gatherings, as well as a designated area for the city’s diverse communities to interact, engage, and learn from one another.
