Motel 6 launched a songwriting contest to give emerging artists the chance to tour their music.
The budget-friendly hotel brand is inviting aspiring musicians to create a song about, or inspired by, Motel 6. Songs will be judged on criteria such as originality and storytelling. The top six songs will be selected by Motel 6, and the grand prize winner will be chosen by public vote.
Ally Wesson, VP of marketing for Motel 6 franchisor Realstar Hospitality, tells strategy the contest is aligned with the tagline that appears on its creatives, “Official Sponsor of Opening Acts“, and brand offerings like “My6 Marketplace,” which includes discounts on music-related items and services for members.
“For many musicians, going out on tour and performing live shows is an important part of getting music out to fans, yet it can be costly to be on the road for an extended period,” Wesson says, adding the economy hotel aims to appeal to “the artist creating fantastic music or the fans travelling to enjoy it.”

The grand prize winner of the Motel 6 Songwriting Contest will receive a cash prize of roughly $8,150 CAD (or $6,000 USD) and 20 room nights at Motel 6 locations of their choice. The five runners-up will also receive six room nights each to support their own road trips. Musicians can enter online for a chance to win now through Sept. 29.
“At Motel 6, we’re proud to support up-and-coming musicians,” said Irwin Prince, president and COO of Realstar Hospitality. “This contest is a fantastic opportunity to help kick-start the career of emerging talent. We will focus on what we do best, providing a comfortable room at a great rate, so artists can focus on what they do best, creating unforgettable music.”
