Global media collective launches “Choose Truth” ahead of World News Day

The global “Choose Truth” campaign was launched earlier this week as part of the lead-up to World News Day on Sept. 28.

World News Day is presented by the WAN-IFRA’s World Editors Forum, The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and Daily Maverick’s Project Kontinuum, a campaign incubator led Branko Brkic, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Daily Maverick, an online news daily based in South Africa.

More than 100 countries, hundreds of news organizations, media associations and individuals will join forces for World News Day to highlight the importance of fact-based journalism, inviting their audiences to support trusted news outlets.

The “Choose Truth” campaign – which was developed by Project Kontinuum – emphasizes the commitment of journalists to report the facts while acknowledging the public’s challenge of navigating a toxic information environment flooded with misinformation and disinformation.

In a joint article for World News Day, Brkic and Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa wrote: “The noise and violence will eventually subside, and the discourse based on truth and decency will return. For now, we fight – every moment of every hour, of every day… We will defend Truth.”

David Walmsley, editor-in-chief of The Globe and Mail and founder of World News Day, added: “World News Day offers a moment to reflect on the vital role that independent and courageous journalists play in communities worldwide. Their work provides the evidence that leads to truth.”

The WAN-IFRA, or World Association of News Publishers, is the global organization of the world’s press, made up of 3,000 news publishers and technology companies and 60 national publishers’ associations, representing 18,000 publications in 120 countries.
