Tim Hortons manages to celebrate Canada’s game during Super Bowl LIX

Tim Hortons leaned into national nostalgia during the Canadian broadcast of Super Bowl LIX between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The Canadian QSR updated Stompin’ Tom Connors’ beloved “Hockey Song,” in collaboration with music publisher Anthem Entertainment, but with a football twist, adding football is “the second best game you can name.”

The spot aired during a wave of Canadian patriotism after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Canada and Mexico with 25% tariffs and China with 10% tariffs that was announced on Feb. 1 before being postponed for a month on Feb. 3. Trump then announced on Feb. 9, on his way to the Super Bowl in Air Force One, that the U.S. would impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

Hope Bagozzi, chief marketing officer for Tim Hortons, says the Super Bowl spot is sharing a message of Canadian pride with a fresh take on one of Canada’s most iconic songs. The updated lyrics give a good-natured nod to the fact that hockey, Canada’s national winter sport, still reigns supreme, Bagozzi added.

“‘The Hockey Song’ is a Canadian anthem – everyone knows the words, it’s part of our Canadian DNA,” she said. “So, when we thought about how to celebrate this weekend, we knew this was the perfect time to remind everyone that while we like football, Canadian culture is unique and that will never change. And even when we cheer for football, hockey is still the best game you can name.”

The ad aired in Canada on Sunday before and during the Super Bowl. It was developed with Tim Hortons creative agency, GUT Toronto.
