WPP announces Microsoft COO Cindy Rose as new CEO

WPP has appointed Cindy Rose as its new CEO.

Rose will take over the position on Sept. 1 from Mark Read, who will step down as CEO but support the leadership transition until the end of the year.

Rose brings leadership experience from tech, telecommunications, media, entertainment and creative industries and, for the past nine years, has held senior leadership positions at Microsoft, where she is currently COO of global enterprise.

Before taking on her current role in March 2023, Rose served as president of Microsoft Western Europe and CEO of Microsoft U.K.

Other previous career stops include at Vodafone, where she was managing director of the U.K. consumer business, and Virgin Media, where she was executive director of digital entertainment and media sales.

Rose also held a number of titles during a 15-year career at the Walt Disney Company, including SVP and managing director of the Disney Interactive Media Group’s Europe, Middle East and Africa division.

She has been a non-executive director on the WPP board since 2019. The British-American dual citizen will be based in London and New York.

“[Rose] has supported the digital transformation of large enterprises around the world – including embracing AI to create new customer experiences, business models and revenue streams,” WPP chair Philip Jansen said in a news release. “Her expertise in this landscape will be hugely valuable to WPP as the industry navigates fundamental changes and macroeconomic uncertainty.”

In Tuesday’s trading update, WPP updated its forecast for 2025’s first half like-for-like revenue (less pass-through costs) to decline between 4.2% and 4.5%.

WPP, which operates Ogilvy, VML, Wavemaker and Burson, now expects revenue to decrease between 5.5% and 6% below previous expectations in the second quarter alone.
