Legacy grocers remain preferred shopping destination for Labour Day: poll

More than half of Labour Day shoppers are picking conventional grocers as their shopping destination for supplies, according to a Numerator consumer survey fielded to nearly 700 Canadian consumers.

When asked where they will purchase items for Labour Day, respondents said the preferred shopper destinations are conventional grocery banners (53%), liquor stores (46%), mass retailers like Walmart and Giant Tiger (28%), club wholesale such as Costco (25%) and discount or dollar stores (21%). This is followed by restaurants (12%), local businesses (11%) and general merch stores such as Canadian Tire (10%).

Meanwhile, online has a tiny share for Labour Day spenders, with 6% of respondents saying they will opt for Amazon and eBay.

The survey also revealed that 67% of Canadian Labour Day celebrants are buying food and 48% are buying alcohol for the long weekend. Beer is the top choice (76%) for those planning to purchase alcohol, followed by spirits (46%). Twenty-five percent of consumers plan on purchasing a non-alc. beverages.

According to Numerator data, 19% of respondents are cooking or baking at home or hosting others. Furthermore, 13% are going to patronize a restaurant, with 11% travelling or ordering food in for takeout or delivery.

More than half of holiday shoppers will spend between $50 and $200 on their Labour Day items, with a quarter saying they plan to spend less than they did last year.

The numbers show that 10% are going to a Labour Day public celebration such as fireworks or a parade, while 9% are going out for drinks. The preview also reveals that 8% of respondents are purchasing games or activities, and 7%, party supplies/decorations.
