Canadian Tire on Wednesday launched its first Hudson’s Bay-branded collection since acquiring the now-defunct retailer’s iconic brand elements in the spring.
Items, including the iconic Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket, striped ornaments and accessories including espresso sets and bedding, will be available in-store at Canadian Tire. The limited-edition holiday capsule Stripes Collection marks the Canadian Tire debut for the brand, which was founded in 1670 and considered to be the country’s oldest.
A social-media campaign was launched this week to amplify the items on Canadian Tire and Hudson’s Bay Company’s channels.
“The Stripes have been part of Canada’s story for generations and we’re excited to offer this limited-edition capsule,” Eva Salem, Canadian Tire’s SVP of marketing and brand, said in a news release. “We’ve partnered with the same long-standing vendors to ensure the quality, craftsmanship and authenticity that customers have come to expect from the Stripes, resulting in a meticulously selected limited collection.”
Earlier this fall, Canadian Tire launched The Blanket Fund to carry on the initiative that had been part of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s truth and reconciliation efforts. In partnership with The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, Canadian Tire committed to donating 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of Point Blankets, and a guaranteed minimum of $1,000,000 annually, to support Indigenous-led initiatives.
May’s acquisition gives Canadian Tire control of HBC’s brands and other intellectual property, including the HBC stripes design and various other company names, logos, designs, coats of arms and trademarks.
“Bringing the Stripes back to Canadians is both an honour and a responsibility,” Canadian Tire president and CEO Greg Hicks said in the release. “Recognizing the enthusiasm and nostalgia Canadians hold for the brand, we are determined to reintroduce it with care. As a first foray, this curated Hudson’s Bay Stripes collection is a reflection of our stewardship.”
