CIBC opens `Asian’ branch

a new storefront cibc banking centre for Asians just north of Toronto is a hit with the Chinese community.

Joe Tong, manager of business development for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce’s Toronto east region, says the freestanding facility, opened a month ago in a small strip plaza in Richmond Hill, ‘has already proven a success beyond our expectations.’

Tong says the centre, believed to be the first of its kind in Canada, is aimed at ‘mature and affluent’ Asians, in particular, the large Chinese population in the fast-growing Toronto suburb of Richmond Hill.

‘The culture, approach and handling of transactions is very similar to the oriental style,’ he says.

He says a full range of services is provided, including personalized attention such as over-the-phone transactions and at-home or at-business service after hours and on weekends.

Advertisements for the facility were placed in local Chinese and Taiwanese publications, but news of the opening spread mostly by word of mouth.
