Cormark Communications of London, Ont. has snagged its first North American account. The agency has been hired by Electrohome of Kitchener, Ont. to market its large-screen projection systems.
The high-tech systems are used by businesses to project video, computer data and graphics information on to large screens or walls during presentations and training sessions.
The agency short-list included The Cohen Group of Richmond Hill, Cooper Spearing & Stone of Hamilton, and incumbent G. Thompson Advertising of Kitchener.
– The 1992-93 Certified Advertising Agency Practitioner (caap) Program starts Sept. 18. This year, the 30-year-old program has been revised from a three- to a two-year course.
The course is put on by the Institute of Canadian Advertising (ica) and taught by some of the top people in the industry. It covers industry basics such as marketing, creative media and research.

– The 81 Subway Sandwiches and Salads franchisees in the Greater Toronto area have chosen Marshall Fenn to handle local promotions and advertising.
A promotion that partners Subway with the Toronto Argonauts cfl team is now under way.
– MDC Corp. of Toronto intends to buy a 50% interest in Toronto design and marketing consultancy, Strategies International, subject to regulatory approval.
Strategies International’s client list includes the Bank of Bermuda, Johnson & Johnson, Ortho Pharmaceutical, Royal Trust, Tambrands Canada, Pillsbury Canada, Canada Packers and Clairol.
The deal is expected to be completed by Sept. 15, bringing mdc’s billings to more than $78 million with revenues in excess of $38 million.
mdc is a publicly traded communications company with nine operating subsidiaries.
– After 40 years of operating in Canada, ServiceMaster has hired its first Canadian agency, Toronto’s Harnden Baker Communications.
In the past, Canadian advertising has been handled through Service Master’s Chicago head office by u.s. agencies Young & Rubicam and Bozell.
ServiceMaster, based in Mississauga, Ont., provides both residential and consumer carpet and furniture cleaning, janitorial services and disaster restoration.
Plans include public relations, a national radio campaign, and print ads in trade publications.
– Stone & Hand of Toronto has been given the advertising assignment for Ashcor Partitions of Mississauga, Ont. The company makes office partitions under the names Ashcor and Sherwood, after its recent purchase of Sherwood Industrial Office Systems. Advertising in the past has been in business magazines, but media plans have not been solidified.
– Two-year-old Galderma Canada has picked National PharmaCom of Toronto to handle public relations, as well as product communications and other special projects, for its skin care pharmaceuticals, which include Benzac benzoyl peroxide acne treatments, Cetaphil facial cleanser and Ionil T Plus, a tar shampoo for dandruff.
The company’s advertising to date has been limited to professional journals. National PharmaCom was formed at the beginning of this year by National Public Relations, which also has offices in Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec City.
Galderma Canada, based in Mississauga, Ont., is a division of Galderma International, a French-based joint venture of Nestle and L’Oreal Cosmetics.
– Graphic designer Kam Wai Yu has left The Toronto Star to be full-time creative director at 2 Dimensions, a Toronto company he formed in 1988 with partner Derek Armstrong. For the past four years Yu has been designing the cover for the Star’s weekly What’s On section, winning 38 international design awards during that time.
Yu’s 2 Dimensions handles corporate and commercial design work for clients such as IBM Canada, SunLife Insurance, Andersen Consulting and Letraset Canada.
– Jeffrey Elliott Communications of Toronto has taken over investor and public relations duties for new client, RML Medical Laboratories.
The communication firm’s first assignment was to create a new name for the Toronto-based biotechnology company. Shareholders will be asked to approve the name IMUTEC today at rml’s annual meeting.
rml develops drugs to stimulate the human immune system to help fight diseases such as cancer. Clinical trials of its drug, Virulizin, are now under way in Canada and Mexico.
