For the record…

Mediacom and The Poster Network have contributed about $1 million worth of transit shelter space across Canada to the new drug campaign from Alliance for a Drug-Free Canada.

The alliance is a consortium of prominent business and other leaders committed to education about drug abuse in the workplace and in society.

– Toronto’s CJCL Sports Radio 1430 has signed two newspaper writers as its mid-morning hosts in the 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday to Friday slot.

They are Steve Simmons, a regular columnist at The Toronto Sun, and Mary Ormsby, sports reporter for The Toronto Star.

The am station became Canada’s first 24-hour all sports venture Sept. 4.

– PMB ’92 says despite an economy that has been going downhill for far too long, the average household income for alpine skiers was up 14% in 1990-91.

According to The Ski Canada Group of Magazines, quoting PMB ’92, the average household income for active alpine skiers was $65,087, far better than 1989-90’s $56,988.

These figures are for households earning less than $250,000 a year. If that figure is raised to the $1-million mark, the average shoots up to more than $105,000 per household.

Moreover, says Ski Canada Group, active alpine skiers are among the most affluent of any sport market and have incomes that surpass those of the tennis, power boat and golf markets.

Nor is this enviable demographic target static. PMB `92, says Ski Canada Group, reports there are almost two million active alpine skiers more than 12 years old, up 5% over last year’s book.

– Le Ski Magazine, Ski Canada Group’s publication in Quebec, will start an audit of its 1991-92 circulation.

Results of the audit will be available in November. Le Ski is in its sixth year of publishing.

– Harnden, Baker Communications reports six tips for building a public relations budget for management approval from u.s. authority Lewis Perdue.

Perdue says be precise, and offer detail and justification just as other departments do.

He says set measurable goals, and develop a pr plan with your pr agency to show what needs to be done to accomplish the public relations goals.

He says determine and show the level of activity to accomplish your goals, and estimate the number of hours each part of the pr program will take, and who will be responsible for them, staff or public relations agency.

Perdue says too many companies shoot from the pr hip, only to complain about poor results.

– Radio-Canada and tva are still bucking for first place in French-language programming this season, says Cossette Communication-Marketing, with Television Quatre Saisons staying out of the fray and Radio-Quebec ‘rolling over and playing dead.’

Radio-Canada, says Cossette, wants to be the leader from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. by building on its news programs at the start and end of the evening, and to have more powerful public affairs shows serving as a framework for its successful peak period programs.

tva prefers to be the daily leader, using its resources sparingly, Cossette says, but gradually adjusting its programming to that of Radio-Canada.

Cossette says tva has ‘grown accustomed’ to being a complementary tv station, targetting viewers aged 18-49, but adding some Quebec content to lessen its likeness to U.S. TV.

Radio-Quebec is happy being an educational service, saving its energy and money for new studios, Cossette says.

Among the new programs on Radio-Canada is Les garcons de St-Vincent, a mini-series bound to unsettle viewers.

Les garcons is about a government-funded boys’ orphanage, run by a religious order, at which reports of violence and sexual abuse are initially hushed up.

tva has among its new offerings a Sunday night talk show fronted by tart-tongued nationalist Lise Payette. On tqs, the new show of the season is Sonia Benezra, who was the popular hostess of Musique Plus, who will conduct live interviews with popular artists. Also, for the truly discerning, tqs has La guerre des clans, a Quebec adaptation of Family Feud.

Cossette says there is not much new at Radio-Quebec, save last year’s Cinema d’Hollywood becoming this year’s Cinema de Paris.
