After filling in as McCann-Erickson Advertising’s acting media director, Lorraine Hughes has been appointed senior vice-president, national media director at the Toronto based agency.

Hughes, who substituted for six months while the actual media director, Virginia Dymott, was on maternity leave, took over the media job permanently after Dymott, who returned to work last September, resigned to spend more time with her family.

Hughes says she is pleased about her appointment, noting ‘I test-drove the job.’

She says she has definite ideas for the agency’s media operations, but adds it is too soon for her to discuss them.

Hughes’ appointment took effect Jan. 4.

Hughes, who has been in the industry for 18 years, was media director at Baker Lovick for two years before becoming a consultant in 1991.

She says working as a consultant made her realize how much she missed advertising.

Hughes’ career started in the mid-1970s at Bates.

She then moved to Vickers & Benson, later joining Scali McCabe Sloves for nine years, four of them spent as media director, before her switch to Baker Lovick.
