Thrifty Car Rental has launched a dealer promotion called Thrifty Salutes Hockey Parents in conjunction with the Coca-Cola Classic NHL Future Stars program.

Starting mid-February, more than 1,300 children will participate in Future Stars clinics in 15 Canadian centres. Coke will select two players from each centre to attend the Future Stars Hockey Camp in Quebec City this summer, with instruction from Wayne Gretzky, spokesperson for Thrifty and Coke Classic, and other hockey stars.

As its part of the promotion, Thrifty is offering renters a chance to win autographed Wayne Gretzky game sticks, and will be providing parents and players at the clinics with gifts.

Christopher Lang & Associates of Toronto handled all advertising and promotional material and co-ordinated the program for Thrifty and Coca-Cola.

è Marion Merrell Dow has chosen Cossette Communication-Marketing of Montreal to handle advertising for Cardizem, a cardiovascular drug from its Nordic Commercial unit.

The account was previously with Gall Communications, Montreal.

è Chrysler-owned Thrifty Car Rental is featuring new Chrysler LH series cars in its latest magazine and tv campaign, which started last week.

Thrifty’s agency cme-khbb created the print ads.

tv consists of 30-second standard spots, with eight-second holes filled new footage of the Chrysler cars.

Thrifty dealers buy Chrysler products through a fleet program, and in return receive an advertising allowance for their purchases.

è The public relations department of VRH Communications of Vancouver has officially become the western office of Spectrum Public Relations, a unit of BBDO Canada.

Spectrum will represent its own clients, as well as those of McKim Baker Lovick/BBDO and vrh.

è It is a hat trick for THinc. Advertising of Vancouver. Archive Imaging Services of Toronto has chosen the shop to develop its communications and marketing programs, including brochures, direct mail and trade show materials.

The second new client is Langley, b.c. retailer, Ella’s Clothes Closet, which sells international and local designer fashions to clients throughout Canada and the u.s.

Also new to the client roster is the Alberta Division of Best Cleaners and Contractors, a 37-year-old Vancouver janitorial and restoration firm.

THinc. was established last June, and specializes in print media and business development projects.

è There have been some big changes at Bouchard Communications of Montreal. The three-year old agency has been renamed Diesel Marketing and added some new owners.

Agency President Jean-Francois Bouchard has taken on Mathew Collingwood, business development director, and Philippe Meunier, creative director, as partners.

Martin Hebert has joined the firm as production manager.

è After a review of several public relations firms, the Tea Council of Canada has chosen Harbinger Communications of Toronto to develop its overall communications plan.

The council is an international association of tea packers and leading tea producing nations including Sri Lanka and Kenya.

Harbinger has also recently been hired by the Systems Integration division of IBM Canada to build awareness of the company’s leadership role in the field.

è Joint Communications of Mississauga, Ont. is expanding its u.s. presence.

Effective April 1, a new office will be opened in Stamford, Conn. John Parikhal, the chief executive officer of Joint, will run the company from the Connecticut office.

The firm also has an office in Atlanta.

è Three companies have joined in Markham, Ont. to form a new entity called Partners in Performance.

The group’s 60 employees are housed in a new 20,000-square-foot building jointly owned by the three companies: Maximum Productions, a video and production company; Image Management Group, which provides specialty advertising, premium incentive and recognition programs; and, gtc (Group Travel Co-ordinators), an incentive travel and conference planning firm.
