Direct response veteran David Taylor is leaving Toronto’s Taylor-Tarpay when his contract runs out at the end of this month to set up a new company called Taylor Direct.

Taylor, chairman of the agency, co-founded Taylor-Tarpay Direct Advertising with company President Pete Tarpay in 1981.

Four years ago, it was bought by Saatchi & Saatchi, becoming a subsidiary of Saatchi & Saatchi Direct of New York.

Taylor has been in the direct marketing business for 33 years, including more than 20 years with Maclean Hunter.

Before Taylor-Tarpay, he was general manager of International Direct Marketing, now known as Vickers & Benson Direct.

Coleman goes Camp(ing)

camp Associates of Toronto is the first Canadian agency to be hired by The Canadian Coleman Company, maker of camping and outdoor equipment.

The Canadian unit of The Coleman Company, based in Wichita, Kans., has had sales and manufacturing operations in Canada since the mid-1940s, but its limited advertising and promotional activities have been handled by its u.s. agency in Wichita.

Coleman realized its ability to recognize the Canadian market was restricted without in-market talent and reviewed about five Toronto agencies last November.

Camp is taking a new look at the company’s advertising, sales and promotional needs, with the goal of integrating all marketing, while being able to respond to regional needs as well.
