Harrod & Mirlin of Toronto moved directly to the drawing board after its recent win of the Sharp Electronics of Canada business.

H&M is planning for next month’s launch of the Sharp Viewcam Personal Video System.

The innovative new addition to the camcorder market features a four-inch lcd color screen, invented and manufactured by Sharp, that is used instead of a viewfinder.

It allows the user to hold the camcorder at any level and monitor the action by watching the screen.

The Viewcam System can also be used as a vcr, and, with an adapter and stand, can be transformed into a tv.

Sharp has traditionally been a strong print advertiser and Christine Olijnyk, manager of marketing services, says print will still be a part of the advertising mix, although Olijnyk adds the rest of the strategy is still in the planning stage.

The other Toronto agencies invited to pitch for the Sharp account were Geoffrey B. Roche & Partners, GM&A Advertising and Griffin Bacal Volny.

The Sharp u.s. account is with Griffin Bacal, New York.

The Canadian Sharp consumer electronics assignment had been held by Kelley Advertising of Toronto for the past three years.

Sharp’s business products division, Sharp Information Systems, continues to handle its advertising separately.
