There has been a changing of the guard in Canada’s movie magazine business.
Beginning this summer, Marquee magazine will disappear from Cineplex Odeon Theatres across the country and be replaced by Tribute magazine.
Brian Stewart, publisher of Tribute, says his magazine has a distribution of 360,000 now, and when it moves into Cineplex, the number will jump to about 650,000.
Stewart says the four-times-a-year Kids Tribute will boost its distribution to more than 300,000 when it becomes available in Cineplex theatres.
Tribute already has a distribution agreement with Famous Players movie theatres, he says.
Stewart says Tribute comes out seven times a year now and there are plans to increase its frequency to nine times a year in 1994.
Other advertisers
He says as well as movie and video companies, other advertisers in his magazine include packaged food firms and health and beauty aids concerns.
Richard Pudwell, associate publisher of Marquee, says changing times mean at some time in the future his magazine will cease distribution in Cineplex movie theatres.
Pudwell says that until they are informed otherwise by Marquee, advertisers can be sure ads booked will be published and distributed as usual.
Sun distribution
Marquee is also distributed four times a year in The Toronto Sun newspaper.
Stewart, who says about one-third of Tribute’s distribution is non-theatrical, adds the magazine has been available on Air Canada flights for two years and has limited newsstand sales across the country.
Kids Tribute is also available at K-Mart and Jumbo Video, he says.
Stewart says newsstand copies of Tribute and Kids Tribute both cost $1.95.
Tribute is owned by Tribute Publishing in Toronto, a sister company to Basstoy International.
