Chiat/Day Toronto has been named agency-of-record for the Ottawa-based Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Canada.

- Ammex Tax & Duty Free Shops has awarded a US$1-million account to Ambrose Carr Linton Kelly of Toronto with the mandate to attract Canadian shoppers by advertising directly to them in Canada.

Several high-profile Canadian media will be used for a summer campaign launching next month in southern Ontario and the Vancouver area.

Ammex, a division of Duty Free International of Ridgefield, Conn., operates 60 stores at 41 crossings along the Canada/u.s. border.

- The team from British Columbia Institute of Technology won the top prize in the Canadian Advertising Student Competition held in Edmonton May 7.

Second place went to Grant McEwan College, Edmonton.

Since last October students have been working on a marketing project for the GEO Division of General Motors of Canada.

- Stringer Veroni Ketchum of Toronto has been chosen agency-of-record for Canadian Thermos Products, which has been without an agency for some time.

New advertising is expected to launch new products this fall, with another flight during the key Christmas selling season.

The Toronto company makes vacuum bottles, lunch kits, coolers, coffee carafes and barbecues under the Thermos brand name.

- Genesis Media, the media buying arm of Vickers & Benson Advertising, has picked up the $2-million media account of C/FP Distribution of Toronto, a Canadian independent film distributor.

The account will be handled by the Genesis Entertainment division.

Campaigns now under way support two C/FP films, The Crying Game and Strictly Ballroom.

The budget is estimated between $200,000 and $700,000 for a multimedia campaign that will use outdoor, radio, print and, possibly, tv.

Media placement will continue to be handled by Genesis, the media buying arm of Vickers & Benson.

‘Boldly Go’ is used in English advertising and ‘Enfine Libre’ (freedom at last) in French-language executions.

The 36-week campaign launched last month by Cossette Communication-Marketing for the supplier of communications products is for cellular, paging, air-to-ground and other wireless tehnologies such as the personal cordless phones.

- Barry Base & Partners is the new name of Base Brown & Partners, an agency that began in 1968 and lived through several name changes until 1978, when Brad Brown became a partner in the agency with Barry Base.

The name continued until now, although Base bought Brown out in 1988.

Brown is now president of McKnight Brown & Associates, a division of DDB Needham.

The first assignment is the launch of Tanacet 125, the first over-the-counter product approved in Canada for the prevention of migraine headaches.

Tanacet 125, an all-natural product, will be distributed by Nutricorp International, a division of C.E. Jamieson & Company.

- Sega of Canada has appointed Berger & Associates of Toronto as public relations agency for its interactive video game hardware, software and peripheral products.

Sega recently opened its Canadian office in Richmond Hill, Ont. under the direction of Jeff McCarthy, vice-president and general manager, and Larry Ashton, vice-president operations.

Berger is part of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide.
