Formed in 1992 in response to a changing economy, The Stephen Leacock Foundation for Children is a Canadian organization comprised of business leaders who believe the best way for society to fund social programs is through efforts of the business community.

As part of their continuing fundraising efforts, The Leacock Foundation (The Leacock Club) has organized The Flagpole Event, a 10-day happening in Berczy Park in downtown Toronto between June 7-18.

Fifty senior executives from companies around Toronto will take turns sitting on a 40-foot custom-built flagpole with the goal of raising $10,000 each.

Using telephones and fax machines at the top of the flagpole to get donations from their friends and associates, the overall goal is $500,000.

Executives from Molson Breweries, Bell Mobility, Epson Canada, Royal Bank, Royal Insurance, ScotiaMcLeod and Coca-Cola, to name a few, will contribute their time and efforts to benefit charities such as Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, Junior Achievement of Metro Toronto & York Region, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Canada, The Second Toronto Ronald McDonald House and Kinark Child & Family Services.

In return for their $10,000 contribution, participating companies display signage and use booths on-site for product sampling and display purposes.
