In what it describes as a cost-cutting exercise, Smithkline Beecham Consumer Brands has closed its Weston, Ont. plant, throwing 146 production employees out of work.

Production on such brands as Tums, Aquafresh and Oxy acne medications will be transferred to the u.s.

The company says sales, marketing and administration will not be affected.

è u.s.-based Procter & Gamble is expected to announce the results of its global effectiveness task force, ‘Strengthening Global Effectiveness,’ by the end of the month.

Last December, p&g authorized work teams to review its operations around the world with the goal of ensuring the company remains cost-competitive.

Jacqui D’Eon, p&g’s group manager for external affairs, says the work teams reported back to senior management last month, making more than 150 separate recommendations.

è Merle Norman Cosmetics has closed its Canadian head office, located in Toronto.

The closure took place at the end of June.

In the future, the company’s Canadian operations will be handled out of its u.s. head office located in Los Angeles.

Merle Norman markets a wide range of cosmetic products, distributed exclusively through independently-owned cosmetics studios.

For some time, the studios have placed product orders directly with the Los Angeles office. Now marketing and promotions will also be handled by Los Angeles.

è Smith and Nephew is marketing a specialty pack of Dennis the Menace Elastoplast adhesive bandages.

The plastic bandages feature images from the youth-oriented film, Dennis the Menace, released by Warner Bros. on June 25.

Steve Wallace, Smith and Nephew’s divisional manager, marketing and sales, private label, says the company is working with retailers to hold store draws, sweepstakes and give away Dennis the Menace growth charts.

As well, Wallace says the firm is running ads in the motion picture publications Kids Tribute, distributed in English Canada, and En Primeur Jeunesses, distributed in Quebec.

The bandage line will also be featured in retailer flyers distributed across the country.
