Magazine Canadian Living has taken a page out of the event marketing handbook, staging a special event involving spouses from Toronto professional sports teams The Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays.

The event involved a baseball challenge pitting the Blue Jays’ wives against the Maple Leaf wives.

It was designed as a fun event which would help build awareness for the Canadian Living Foundation for Families and the need for children’s breakfast programs.

The game drew a wide range of sponsors, including such names as Coca-Cola, Shopsy’s, Hershey’s, Federal Express, Renee’s Gourmet, Gelato Fresco, The Body Shop, New Balance and Cooper and Wilson.

Funds were raised through the sale of donated concession foods and the sale of raffle tickets for donated prizes.

Played at Toronto’s Christie Pits park, the seven-inning game ended in an 8-7 win for the Maple Leafs wives.

More than 3,000 people attended, and plans are to make the game an annual event.
