the advertising and Design Club of Canada and Cineplex Odeon are encouraging ad agencies to bring their clients to a special breakfast screening of the 1993 Cannes reel in Toronto.

The screening takes place Nov. 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the Cineplex Canada Square Theatre at 2200 Yonge St.

Jack Neary, creative director of Cossette Communication-Marketing and this year’s Canadian representative on the Cannes judging committee, says he feels it is important that both agency people and clients become exposed to a wider variety of work.

‘It’s worthwhile being reminded of how powerful a piece of good advertising can really be,’ Neary says.

‘But it’s also worth going to Cannes,’ he says. ‘Being a judge, or just going to the screenings and seeing how much bad stuff gets through is also worth seeing.’

Neary says the contrast between good and bad work might prompt those clients who are still clinging to old standards to challenge themselves and their agencies.

While Neary says he was disappointed by the flagrant politicking of some Cannes judges, he says that he feels more Canadians should consider the Cannes festival as an important international event.

‘I did make some friends while I was there, and it was gratifying to exchange ideas and to be able to step back and look at the business differently,’ Neary says.
