Busskamp & Kelly of Montreal has been awarded the North American assignment for Open Universal Software, consisting primarily of business-to-business advertising.

The account, estimated at $300,000, was previously handled out of Los Angeles.

Universal markets Open RS/36 software, which simplifies complex business administration computer programs developed for the IBM System 36 and allows it to run on newer machines.

The software was developed by parent company Acom Computer Systems of l.a.,which sells hardware and software to the hospitality industry.

Universal has a worldwide distribution network and offices in Montreal, l.a., Paris, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires.

New National Public Relations unit

New sports marketing unit National Public Relations of Montreal has started a new division called SporSpec Management to specialize in sports marketing.

It will be headed by Daniel Lamarre, executive vice-president of National.

Bernard Royal, most recently responsible for marketing merchandising products and special promotions at Radio-Quebec, has joined SporSpec as general manager.

More work for Simpson Gilbert

Simpson Gilbert Advertising and Communications of Sackville, n.b. has been contracted to design and produce a travel catalogue on Ireland and Britain for Brian Moore International Tours of Boston.

Simpson Gilbert was awarded the assignment after completing a corporate identity program for the company’s Canadian subsidiary, Brian Moore Tours Canada.

Owens-Corning picks Thornley

Scott Thornley & Company, Advertising and Design Group, Toronto has been awarded the creative assignment for Owens-Corning Canada (previously Fiberglas Canada).

The assignment includes creation of new broadcast and print campaigns as well as in-store and collateral material.

Thornley had been providing some design and advertising services to Fiberglas for the past seven years.

Remtulla labors for new client

Serono Canada, a pharmaceutical company specializing in bio-technology products, including fertility hormones, has hired Remtulla + Associates of Toronto as its communications agency.

The agency’s first assignment is to promote a new hormone for treating infertility to healthcare professionals coupled with a public information campaign.

Gossage/Reid joint venture

Two Toronto communications veterans have established a new company, a joint venture called Gossage Reid Corporate Communications.

The principals are Patrick Gossage, president of Media Profile, and Heather Reid, president of Heather Reid and Associates, which is part of the DDB Needham Group.

It will be business as usual for Media Profile and Heather Reid and Associates while the two presidents tackle strategic planning and communications assignments for high-end corporate clients, particularly multinationals, looking to change their Canadian operations or establish in Canada.

New Toronto firm

Lexicomm Communications, a new marketing and corporate communications company, has been opened in Toronto by Grace Kuipers and Leslie Wood.

Wood has more than 12 years’ experience in the business, most recently as vice-president responsible for the pharmaceutical and healthcare division of a Toronto agency.

Kuipers’ communications experience comes from working for healthcare and packaged goods clients during eight years in agencies and four years in the public sector.

Weaver Tanner scholarships

Weaver Tanner & Miller of Kitchener, Ont. has established a scholarship program for Conestoga College marketing students.

The firm will award a total of $1,400 annually to three second-year students, in amounts of $800, $400 and $200, based on academic achievement and student presentations.

Agency President Jim Murray says the firm does not want to just hand over the money, but plans to be involved in encouraging students who have the potential to contribute to the industry.
