Win, loss for Cohen

The cohen Group, of Richmond Hill, Ont., has lost the Dell Canada account after the consolidation of North American advertising for Texas-based Dell Computer with Goldberg Moser O’Neill of San Francisco, which has handled the u.s. business since 1988.

On the plus side, Toronto-based Markel Insurance, of Toronto, has named The Cohen Group agency-of-record.

Markel, founded in 1951, provides insurance to the trucking industry through offices in Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton. It also owns an independent trucking school in Guelph, Ont.

Mariposa goes to the movies

Cinematheque Ontario/Festival of Festivals has consolidated its account with The Mariposa Communications Group of Toronto.

For the past two years, advertising for the 10-day film festival has been handled by Scali McCabe Sloves, with Mariposa taking care of design and production of promotional materials.

MDC buys into Cormark

Toronto-based mdc has acquired an interest in Cormark Communications of London, Ont.

The 15-year-old agency reports annual billings of more than $9 million for clients which include Canada Trust, Ciba, United Co-operatives of Ontario, Cuddy Foods and Electrohome.

mdc now has 18 marketing and communications businesses in its organization.

Lipton realigns

The Toronto-based Canadian operation of Thomas J. Lipton has realigned some of its brand advertising to match in with the agencies used in the u.s.

Kelley Advertising has lost Knox Gelatine, Lipton Side Dishes, Mexicasa and Puritan brand canned meats.

Responsibility for Knox and Puritan has not been reassigned.

Advertising for Lipton Side Dishes and Mexicasa has moved to MacLaren: Lintas, which already has Cup-a-Soup and Sunkist Fun Fruits.

J. Walter Thompson gets Ragu Spaghetti Sauce from MacLaren. jwt already has Chicken Tonight sauces, Oxo bouillon, and Lipton teas, including Red Rose and PG Tips.

Clancy and Murray reunite

Writer Jim Murray and art director Michael Clancy are working together again in Toronto through joint ventures with their companies, Onwords & Upwords and Michael Clancy Productions.

Clancy is back in Toronto after three years with McCann-Erickson in Frankfurt as vice-president European creative director for Opel GM and creative co-ordinator for international accounts.

Clancy and Murray have worked together on and off for the past 15 years, most recently from 1988-91.

Feminine hygiene products

get nod

The Canadian Advertising Foundation has eliminated the Television Code of Standards for the Advertising of Feminine Sanitary Protection Products, which it has administered since 1986.

The caf says public complaints about commercials in this category have decreased significantly and that the code has accomplished its goal of ensuring the advertising is considered tasteful by tv viewers.

Advertisers will now submit feminine hygiene commercials directly to the Telecaster Committee and the cbc for clearance.
