The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and drugstore chain Shoppers Drug Mart have launched a national breast cancer awareness and education campaign that runs this month and next.

David Bloom, Shoppers chairman and chief executive officer, says the drugstore chain began its association with the foundation three years ago.

Shoppers wants to help the foundation alert Canadians about the prevalence of breast cancer and to educate them about the need for regular breast self-examination.

Instructional breast self-examination shower cards are available at all Shoppers stores across the country.

The waterproof cards are part of a counter kit at all 700 Shoppers dispensaries, and, although the cards are free, there is a slot in the kit for donations.

Carole Grafstein, the foundation’s president, says early detection through self-examination and mammography are the best hopes for successful breast cancer treatment.

Breast cancer strikes one in nine Canadian women.
