Sportmart, a chain of warehouse sports stores based in Niles, Ill., is opening five stores in Ontario.
Sportmart is a 22-year-old national chain in the u.s. and has about 47 stores, mainly in the Midwest.
It sells brand name sports equipment and clothes in stores with an average floor space of about 42,000 square feet.
It says it carries more than 65,000 different items, including 600 kinds of athletic shoes.
‘Yes we’re large, but if by warehouse you mean we have boxes lying around, and you have to buy a whole case of this, and a ton of that, then, no, we’re not like a warehouse,’ says Charles Halevi, a spokesman for Sportmart.
The company will not yet divulge where it plans to open the stores in Ontario, or the nature of its advertising campaign once it is established.
The stores will be opening sometime in 1995.
