HMV Canada has announced ambitious plans to increase its share of the retail music and computer software markets.
The 77-store chain reports it sold $200 million worth of merchandise in 1994, comprising 20% of the Canadian retail music market.
Much of the growth is expected to come from the addition of significantly more retail floor space.
hmv will expand its 25,000-square-foot flagship store on Yonge Street in Toronto by 10,000 sq. ft., open seven to 10 other stores, and expand or renovate up to 20 others.
Additionally, HMV Canada President Paul Alofs says the retailer is in talks to open a 30,000-sq.-ft. superstore somewhere in Quebec.
Alofs says, as well, hmv will introduce a comprehensive line of computer software titles.
