Taylor Manufacturing Industries took home prizes in three different categories at the 13th annual eddi awards, held Nov. 20 at the Toronto Congress Centre.

Work commissioned by Rogers Communications, Royal Bank of Canada and ADAC Technologies earned honors for the Etobicoke, Ont.-based company.

Taylor also received the 1997 Octanorm Canada Presidents’ Award of Excellence for exceptional merit in the exhibit industry.

The eddis, which recognize excellence in exhibit design, are presented to the client and to the exhibit builder.

ExpoSystems Canada, Design Alternatives and Exhibits International also received awards, for exhibits commissioned by Tecna North America, Royal Doulton Canada and Sprint Canada, respectively.

The eddis are organized by the Exhibit and Display Association of Canada (edac), a North York, Ont.-based organization representing companies that design and build exhibits for trade and consumer shows, museums and exhibitions as well as permanent displays.

The competition is restricted to edac-member companies. Entries are judged by a panel of independent experts.

Awards were presented this year in six categories: exhibits under 240 square feet; exhibits from 241-600 square feet; exhibits over 601 square feet; special projects under $100,000; special projects over $100,000; and best use of visual imaging.

No award was presented in the portable exhibits category.

TELAV Audio Visual Services was named edac resource member of the year, an honor awarded annually to an exhibit industry supplier that has made an outstanding contribution to the business.

The organizers of this year’s eddi awards wish to extend special thanks to the Toronto Congress Centre for its exceptional support as sponsor.

The winning exhibits are profiled on the following pages.

Client: Royal Doulton Canada

Exhibit builder: Design Alternatives

Category E1: Special projects under $100,000

Winner of the 1997 ID Signs/Neon FX Award of Exhibit Excellence

Description:

The project was a retail interior for Royal Doulton Canada. The client’s products range from everyday dinnerware to unique collectible china pieces.

Client objectives:

Royal Doulton had a mandate to build new corporate stores in Canada. It was up to Design Alternatives to design and build five of these stores in a short period of time.

The client requested a decor that incorporated the modern look of metal with the traditional feel of woods. All cabinets and fixtures were designed specifically for these stores. It was also important to the client to create a light and friendly entrance, thus encouraging prospective customers to enter the store.

Objectives achieved:

The design team’s first task was to pick a finish scheme for this new retail store. They came up with a handpicked maple veneer with mahogany accents. This, combined with brushed aluminum fixtures and signage, gave the client the look they were craving.

The team then designed each cabinet, showcase, p-o-p display and table to blend into a cohesive package, with product presentation the primary concern.

Client identification is carried throughout the store, in various sight lines. The cash desk was meticulously designed to reflect the overall store design, as well as to facilitate all the functions of the sales staff.

A generous amount of glass was used to give the client the open front required. Here, the color scheme for the entire store is readily apparent.

From the logo door handles to the custom curved glass shelving, every inch of retail space was designed to create a comfortable and rich atmosphere for the shopper.
